The House sources said Romney agreed there have been some instances of apparent abtfses, but that these are by no means general in the programs to help low-income families become home owners. He was quoted also as saying that new regulations and tighter procedures are helping.

The committee conducted a preliminary investigation early this year of reports that a number of houses sold under the interest subsidy program had only recently been acquired by the sellers at much lower prices. The first investigation centered on Washington, Baltimore, and WASHINGTON (AP) Housing Secretary George Romney was quoted Wednesday as telling the House Banking Committee his department is working with the Justice Department on alleged abuses of government-aided housing programs. The FBI is looking into some instances, House sources said. Romney met with the committee behind closed doors to discuss a report by staff investigators on instances said to show speculative inflation on prices on houses sold to low-income purchasers with federal interest subsidies. Lax enforcement of quality standards on such houses also was alleged.
