Looking for your next job can be a time of excitement and hope about new opportunities to come but it can also be a time of great uncertainty and anxiety, especially if you are not working. The rollercoaster of emotions makes the process much more difficult to stay grounded and focussed. #calmdown #mindfulness #leadership

This. Period.A good friend, an Ex-McKinsey, shared the BTS of corporate recruiting and changed my POV on this. The 'ghost roles' that are posted, the inconsistent screening processes, and the lack of transparency do weigh on talent seeking new opportunities in the marketplace.Opened my eyes to the reality that the system is part of the issue not always the job seeker.

Broken promises!!!A few years ago a friend, a senior agency partner, hired a Rockstar. It was quite a catch! This hire was talented, well respected and a much sought after creative strategist. They had connected at an industry event, remember when people still met at actual events? My friend, the master of the pitch, chatted up this creative dreamer about vision, possibility, and commerce! It was “a match made in agency heaven!”They rushed to the employment offer so that they could of course “hit the ground running!”A few months later, I ran into my friend, and he told me that the hire was a crash and burn! He was bewildered. Joe Rockstar was ineffective and quit within the probation period. “What a train wreck that hire was!”I asked him “What was the agreement and expectations? Did you keep and manage these? My friend looked at me and replied ...Damn!Joe Rockstar had joined the agency with the promise and expectation of running the strategy department. BUT at the same time the other agency partner hired a Senior Account Strategist who was also told it was their role to lead. Joe’s confusion, feelings of betrayal and the inability to make an impact pissed him off! He quickly moved on to another agency that had been courting him. From the moment a candidate signs an offer they are thinking, questioning, hoping “did I make the right decision moving to this company?” And in the first few days, they will answer that question for themselves and spend the following weeks searching for evidence to support whatever decision they made.Within the year, the Account Strategist left because there was no creative strategy! Candidates:·Get clarity on what the role is and what is expected of you.·Try to discern what is being offered. Not only what they are hoping to create but also what does reality look like when you start work on Monday morning?·If it’s not working out speak up!·If no one listens, consider your options. Probation goes both ways!Clients:·Understand what and who you need before recruiting!·Make sure everyone is on the same page.·Be clear with candidates about expectations and agreements during the recruitment.·Continue to check in with new hires to ensure expectations are being met by both!·IF YOU DO NOT SET NEW HIRES UP TO WIN, YOU LOOSE!#recruitment #leadership #hiring #wisdom #agencylife
