Dental Implants in orlando

The American Dental Association calls the development and use of dental implants one of the most exciting advances in dentistry in the past 40 years. Orlando dental implants are artificial tooth roots placed in the jawbone to support replacement teeth. Steady and reliable, dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth, several teeth or an entire upper and/or lower arch of teeth. They closely resemble natural teeth in both appearance and function. Because they are anchored to the jawbone they are long-lasting; with the proper care and maintenance, they can last a lifetime.

Dr. Trevisani is one of the most trusted oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Florida and has been offering implant dentistry to his Orlando-area patients for many years. Learn more about dental implants and contact our practice today to set up an appointment with Dr. Trevisani.

Why It’s Important to Replace Missing Teeth

In addition to being an eyesore, missing teeth are detrimental to a person’s oral health. Gaps between the teeth can harbor bacteria and increase the risk of dental disease. The jawbone underneath missing teeth can start to shrink from lack of use, which affects the facial structure and makes a person look aged.

Gaps between the teeth can also affect the bite. The surrounding teeth may shift around in the mouth and cause the bite to become misaligned. This eventually becomes very uncomfortable, as the teeth no longer fit together correctly.

Replacing missing teeth with implants prevents all of these problems and more.

Surgical Placement of Implants

Dental implants are traditionally placed in a three-stage process. First the titanium implant posts are surgically embedded into the jawbone. Then, the jawbone heals around the posts. Finally, a dental restoration is attached to the top of the post.

Prior to placing the implant posts, Dr. Trevisani will ensure there is adequate jawbone to support the posts. X-rays and CT scans may be used to plan the surgical placement of the implant posts.

Osseointegration

During the healing period — called osseointegration — the jawbone and implant post integrate, forming a sturdy foundation for the dental restoration. Osseointegration can take anywhere from two to six months, depending on the patient and the specific case. Dr. Trevisani will likely place a temporary dental restoration on top of the implant post so the implants patient can speak, smile and eat comfortably until the jawbone heals and the permanent restoration is ready.

Restoration of Implants

During the final stage, Dr. Trevisani attaches a dental restoration to the top of the implant post, on an extension piece called an abutment. The type of implant restoration depends on the number of teeth that need to be replaced.

  • Replacing a single tooth: If the patient is only replacing a single tooth, Dr. Trevisani uses a dental crown. He will screw the crown onto the top of the implant post, on a piece called an abutment.
  • Replacing several teeth: If Dr. Trevisani is replacing several teeth at once, he may use an implant-anchored dental bridge or partial dentures to fit into the gap. In the case of the bridge, the patient must have healthy teeth to the support the bridge on at least one side.
  • Replacing all teeth: If the patient is missing a complete set of upper and/or lower teeth, Dr. Trevisani will use the Hybridge dental prosthesis. Hybridge is a dental appliance that resembles a complete set of dentures, but is attached to several implants, making it reliable and stable.

The Results

With the proper care and maintenance, dental implants in Orlando can last a lifetime. They look very natural and blend in seamlessly with the surrounding teeth. The dental restoration is specially selected to match the patient’s natural teeth in color, shape and size.

Not only do Dr. Trevisani’s Orlando dental implants look great, but they also promote normal function. They allow the patient to chew naturally. The chewing actually stimulates the jawbone, preventing it from wasting away. The implant also facilitates a normal, healthy bite and prevents the surrounding teeth from shifting around in the mouth.
