2023 Toyota Tacoma: Choosing the Right Trim (2024)

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma remains one of the most popular pickups sold today. Its price, size, power, and reliability make it a favorite of urban dwellers and off-road enthusiasts. The Tacoma competes with the Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, Honda Ridgeline, and Nissan Frontier in a crowded field of midsize pickups.

Toyota offers 34 model configurations from which to choose, including Access Cab and Double Cab, 5- or 6-foot beds, 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive (2WD or 4WD), and a choice between a 159-horsepower, 2.7-liter 4-cylinder and a 278-hp, 3.5-liter V6. There’s even a 6-speed manual transmission offered on some V6 trims.

In addition to an abundance of choices, the Tacoma offers a generous helping of standard equipment, including safety and driver-assist systems. However, if you’re looking for superior fuel economy or a hybrid system, the Tacoma may be a letdown.

2023 Toyota Tacoma SR: $27,750

The SR trim represents the most barebones Tacoma, offered in Access Cab with a 6-foot bed or Double Cab with a 5-foot bed. The standard engine is a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder, with a 3.5-liter V6 optional. A 6-speed automatic transmission and automatic limited-slip rear differential come standard regardless of engine choice, and 4WD with an electronic transfer case is optional.

Towing with the 2.7-liter maxes out at 3,500 pounds, while the V6 can pull up to 6,300 pounds.

Even though it’s an entry-level trim, Toyota equips the SR with its TSS P (Toyota Safety Sense P) suite of driver aids. The mix includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.

The Tacoma includes all mandated safety and airbags systems, including driver and passenger knee airbags, a rear backup camera, and a tire-pressure monitor.

The SR features styled 16-inch steel wheels, color-keyed rear bumper and door handles (replaced with black when selecting the Utility Package), and a composite bed liner with four adjustable tie-down cleats and four fixed tie-down points.

Also standard is a lockable and removable tailgate, halogen headlights, rear privacy glass, a sliding rear window, intermittent wipers, and front skid plates covering the engine and suspension.

The SR cabin touts cloth-covered manually-adjustable front bucket seats, including manual driver’ seat lumbar support, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, power windows, power door locks, and a multi-information display with readings for outside temperature, trip meter, and average fuel economy.

Manual single-zone air conditioning comes standard on the 4-cylinder SR, while the V6 version upgrades to dual-zone automatic climate control.

The SR’s audio system consists of a 7-inch touchscreen monitor, a 6-speaker AM/FM radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth streaming connectivity, and a 3-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. Subscription-based apps include Toyota Connected Services, Safety Connect, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Optional equipment for the SR is sparse but includes an Access Cab Utility Package featuring a black rear bumper, black door handles, and a fixed rear window while deleting the rear seats, rear speakers, and rear cup holders.

The SR Convenience Package adds remote keyless entry that can be bundled with a tonneau cover.

With the $1,335 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR Access Cab has a total price of $29,085. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, you can expect a monthly payment of around $549. See 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Tacoma SR5: $30,430

The SR5 is the most popular Tacoma trim for a good reason. Like the SR, it comes in Access or Double Cab with a choice of bed lengths, engines, and drivetrains. However, the SR5 adds more features and opens the door to more optional upgrades.

Building off the SR, the SR5 adds a charcoal-colored grille with chrome surrounds, heated power side mirrors, individual tire pressure monitors, and fog lights. V6 models gain 16-inch alloy wheels and Class IV tow hitch receiver (includes 7-pin connector and Trailer Sway Control), while Double Cab V6 models get a power sliding rear window.

The SR5 gains a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth controls, remote keyless entry, and an 8-inch touchscreen.

SR5 V6 models gain a 10-way power driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar support and the Smart Key proximity key fob with push-button start.

The SR5 Appearance Package (4-cylinder models) adds 16-inch alloy wheels and color-keyed fender flares.

Optional upgrades offered only with the V6 include the SX Package, which brings blackout treatment to the 16-inch wheels and fender flares, moldings, badges, and mirror caps.

The Technology Package includes a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert. At the same time, the SR5 Dynamic Navigation Package adds premium audio, parking sensors, and Dynamic Navigation with a 3-year trial, including Destination Assist. Dynamic Navigation provides real-time over-the-air updates to maps and points of interest. It comes complimentary for the first three years, after which you’ll have to pay a subscription to maintain the service.

The V6 SR5 Double Cab with the 5-foot bed offers a new Chrome Package that adds 18-inch chrome-finished alloy wheels, door handles, and exhaust tips.

Finally, the SR5 V6 Double Cab 4WD offers the Trail Edition that adds a 1.1-inch front lift and half-inch rear lift, 16-inch bronze wheels with Goodyear Kevlar all-terrain tires, and a locking rear differential. The package includes undercarriage skid plates, lockable bed storage including a driver’s side cooler, black fabric seats with tan stitching, and a 120-volt outlet in the bed.

Toyota offers the Trail Edition in four colors: Magnetic Gray Metallic, Lunar Rock, black, and white.

With the $1,335 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR5 Access Cab has total price of $31,765. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, you can expect a monthly payment of around $599. See 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR5 models for sale near you

  • Available 10-way power driver’s seat – Provides more options for getting comfortable and includes 2-way power lumbar support to help ward off lower back fatigue.
  • Available Technology Package – Adds a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic detection to help avoid obstacles outside the driver’s line of sight.

2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport: $34,660

The TRD Sport comes in Access Cab and Double Cab configurations, but only with the V6 engine. On models equipped with 4WD, buyers have the option of 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions, but not on Double Cabs with the 6-foot bed.

The TRD Sport adds 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, a 120-volt deck-mounted outlet, Smart Key, a wireless charging pad, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and a 1-year trial subscription to the Remote Connect app with the ability to remote start the vehicle via a smartphone.

In keeping with its rugged yet sporty attitude, the TRD Sport gets unique embossed seats in SofTex synthetic leather fabric.

As with the SR5, the TRD Sport Double Cab includes a power-sliding rear window.

Options for the TRD Sport include LED headlights and fog lights, the Technology Package, and the TRD Premium Sport Package, which adds heated front seats, Dynamic Navigation, premium audio with JBL speakers, auto headlights, and Remote Connect.

2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road: $35,940

The TRD Off-Road comes in Access Cab with a 6-foot bed and Double Cab with a 5- or 6-foot bed. The 3.5-liter V6 is standard, and 4WD is optional, as is a 6-speed manual transmission, though not on the Double Cab with the 6-foot bed.

Building off the TRD Sport with a few option packages thrown in, the TRD Off-Road does precisely what its name suggests. Although it has the same engine and transmission as the TRD Sport, the Off-Road adds more option packages intended for serious off-roading.

The TRD Off-Road uses a TRD off-road suspension with Bilstein shocks. Four-wheel-drive models include Multi-Terrain Select with Crawl Control that automatically modulates brakes and throttle, allowing low-speed travel over extreme surfaces so the driver can concentrate on steering. The system comprises five speed settings ranging from low to high. The Multi-Terrain Select system offers modes for Rock, Rock & Dirt, Mogul, Loose Rock, and Mud & Sand.

Standard on the TRD Off-Road are 16-inch machined contrast alloy wheels, an inclinometer with roll/pitch displays, a chrome rear bumper, black fender flares, color-keyed door handles, and an electronic locking rear differential.

The TRD Off-Road Advanced Technology Package adds a Multi-Terrain Monitor that includes front, side, and rear-facing cameras to help spot possible obstacles.

Option packages mirror those of the TRD Sport.

2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road includes:

  • Crawl Control – Assists the Tacoma over loose rock or steep inclines by controlling speed via braking and throttle reduction.
  • Bilstein shocks – Heavy-duty Bilstein shocks are renowned for their ability to tackle challenging terrain yet still provide a smooth and comfortable ride when driving on paved surfaces.
  • Electronic locking rear differential – Locks the rear wheels to move at the same speed, providing excellent traction during low-speed maneuvers.
  • Smart Key – With the key fob in your purse or pocket, you need only the door handle to unlock the car and press a button to start the vehicle.

2023 Toyota Tacoma Limited: $40,505

The Limited is the most luxurious Tacoma, but it is no less capable. The Limited comes in a Double Cab configuration with a 5- or 6-foot bed and the 3.5-liter V6 with 2WD or 4WD.

The Limited includes most of the optional equipment found in the other trim packages, including a 10-way power driver seat, premium JBL audio, Dynamic Navigation, a power tilt/slide moonroof, the Panoramic View Monitor, LED headlights, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Limited adds leather upholstery and the optional Nightshade Special Edition Package, including 18-inch dark smoke wheels, black wheel locks and lug nuts, exhaust tips, moldings, fog light bezels, badges, and a carbon-style black grille.

With the $1,335 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Tacoma Limited Double Cab has a price of $41,840. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, you can expect a monthly payment of around $790. See 2023 Toyota Tacoma Limited models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Tacoma Limited includes:

  • Leather upholstery – This luxurious material has its place even in a pickup. It looks great, it’s resistant to mud and dirt, plus it is easy to clean.
  • Panoramic View Monitor – With cameras positioned all around the vehicle, this system provides a 360-degree view outside the Tacoma, so you’ll never have to guess what’s hiding out of sight.
  • JBL Audio – Six JBL speakers powered by a 440-watt amplifier and backed by a powerful subwoofer deliver rich, deep bass and clear highs at any volume.
  • Blind-spot monitor – Observes traffic driving in Tacoma’s blind spots and warns the driver with a light in the side mirror. When signaling to change lanes, a tone will sound if a vehicle is in the blind spot, and the mirror light will flash.

2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro: $47,185

The flagship of the Tacoma line is also the most capable off-road. The TRD Pro offers no options and comes only in Double Cab with a 5-foot bed. The standard 3.5-liter V6 and the 4WD system can pair with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

The TRD includes all the convenience features found in the Limited with the off-road upgrades of the TRD Off-Road, including the Multi-Terrain Monitor, Multi-Terrain Select with Crawl Control, and an inclinometer.

The TRD Pro adds a beefed-up off-road suspension by TRD (Toyota Racing Development) with FOX internal bypass shocks, a TRD Pro front skid plate, TRD Pro cat-back exhaust, Rigid Industry LED fog lights, and 16-inch TRD Pro black alloy wheels wrapped in Goodyear Kevlar all-terrain tires.

The TRD Pro then adds black TRD Pro leather-trimmed seats, TRD Pro floor mats, and a TRD leather shift knob.

With the $1,335 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Double Cab has a price of $48,520. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, you can expect a monthly payment of around $916. See 2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro includes:

  • TRD-tuned suspension – Designed to take a beating, the suspension on the TRD Pro permits maximum ground clearance and suspension travel, with more robust parts less likely to get damaged.
  • FOX shocks – Delivers bypass shock damping that adjusts to any terrain without the need for expensive and complicated electronics.
  • TRD cat-back exhaust – The “cat” in the cat-back exhaust is short for a catalytic converter. The TRD’s stainless steel exhaust runs from the cat reward, offering a larger diameter pipe with less restriction and thus better power. The exhaust exits at the side, which helps improve the TRD Pro’s departure angle.
  • Rigid Industry LED fog lights – Provide superior light at low levels, perfect when off-roading at dusk or dark.
